The information that Mr.  Birling is saying is obviously wrong. We know that there is a war and  that the titanic does sink. The family now realise that they all  have something to do with this girl Eva Smith and her death. The  younger generation decide to accept this, but the older generation,  knowing that the inspector wasnt a real inspector decide to get on  with their lives as if nothing has happened. Mr. Birling begins the play advocating opposing values of the  inspector. A quote to back this up is `The way some these cranks talk  and write now youd think that everybody has to look after everybody  else, as if we were all mixed up together like bees in a  hive-community and all that nonsense. He has done this by revealing the way she deals with the  people around her. She believes she has a social responsibility to  uphold morality. Mrs. Birling is a woman who cares more for her status  than the people she is meant to be helping. To increase her prestige  she is the chairwoman of a charity committee. This makes her look more  powerful. During the play she abuses her power and this leads to her  abusing her responsibility. A quote to show this is `she seemed to me  to be not a good case-and so I used my influence to have it refused.  This was when Eva Smith went to the womans charity seeking help but  Mrs. Birling refused her on the account that se used the name Mrs.  Birling and she thought that she was insulting her. After she had realized that it  wasnt a real inspector she believed that she had nothing to do with  her death. Eric displays immature behaviour throughout the play for example he  secretly drunk without his parents knowing. He is also irresponsible  in the way that when he gets money for Eva it is stolen from his  fathers office. His acts like this because he is immature and  insecure. He was set up by his mother. Priestly as a means of education and  punishment to the characters of the play. He conducts his  interrogation to suggest he knows those who will benefit most from  this message. Those who decide to resist his ideas are seen to come  off worst. And example of this is Mrs. Birling who starts talking  about the father of the child who is most responsible not knowing thatit was Eric. Sheila insists for her to stop but she doesnt. A quote   to show this is, `I blame the younger man who was father of the child  she was going to have. If, as she said, he didnt belong to her class,  and was some drunken young idler, then all the more reason why he  shouldnt escape. He should be made an example of. If the girls death  is due to anyone, then its due to him. His final speech about Eva  Smith was not only aimed at the characters but also the audience. His  intentions are to make us all identify and think of the possible  consequences of out actions.  Priestly establishes clear character types so we know who to trust  before the inspector arrives. We know not to trust Mr. Birlings  judgement. He uses the inspector as an instrument to uncover the  familys involvement and expose their guilt.

Fortino Tafoya CURR-119 Prof. Won-Jones 7/5/18 20 Strategies to Teach the Common Core One of the best benefits to assist a new teacher is talking to your colleagues. Having a friendly and supportive group or mentor to go to with teaching and strategy questions is very important for a young teacher's success. Watching Marcia Tate's webinar "20 Strategies to Teach the Common Core" I felt as though I had met a new colleague, a new mentor to help me become a better teacher. Aside from Marcia's use of humor and true to life story telling I was pulled in and comforted by some of the blunter things she had to say. It wasn't that she had some huge deep insight into pedagogy, but rather some very practical things about students that I think many people in higher levels of academia forget. One such quote that I will never forget from the webinar comes from the story of Tate's youngest son who was having trouble with the teaching strategies used at his first high school. In describing why the heavy use of lecture didn't work for her son Tate says, "If students aren't learning the way we teach, then we need to teach them the way they learn." This was, to borrow a phrase from a former student of mine, a total-mind-blow for me. I had never heard anyone use that phrase before and I have rarely heard such an accomplished instructor give students so much respect. It makes perfect sense to me to give students more ownership of their education. Tate uses several analogies to illustrate this point, one that I liked was explaining how athletes use diagrams, peer feedback, muscle memory and repetition to learn plays instead of taking notes for a long lecture about a pick n roll offense. She also uses scientific research to show how a diverse use of the strategies can be good for brain health, blood flow, retention, lower stress levels, etc. Her example of a brain biology lesson was high effective because it used her strategies to introduce a complex topic: the brain, dendrites and how we remember things. Teachers must be able to adapt to their students and this means using flexible strategies that avoid the 15-17 minute attention span blowout of teenagers that Tate also describes. Another phrase that stood out to me from the webinar was towards the end when Tate was describing the traits of a brain compatible classroom. When she talks about "connecting ideas" she says, "brains weren't for school, they were meant for life." This was another huge insight into the thought process of a student, especially a modern student who grew up in the smart phone fueled "google-it" era we are now in. As knowledge has become easier to access for just about any topic, learning much also change. If certain pieces of information are too easy to grasp then students need adequate challenges, but those challenges should relate back to a real-world application. This phrase also reminds me that not every student has a goal of going to college, but those students still need to be prepared for the real world and the job market, maybe even more so than college prep students since they may have to use the skills of language arts in relation to income much sooner. Tate describes this p hrase as a way to keep the content relevant so students remain engaged and she is absolutely correct. High school students especially are very critical of why they are learning something, and you may lose them at the onset if the hook and anticipatory set aren't strong enough or relatable. These phrases and the rest o the webinar have helped me create a connection between how I was taught in high school and how I felt about high school. I've realized the lack of strategy diversity that I experienced in high school and junior high and how it might have saved me from bad grades and so much ditching. My 12th grade English class was especially devoid of strategy diversity. We used visual arts in almost every essay and had a decent amount of class discussions, but the content was hardly ever connected to the real world

The Scarlet Letter – Symbol Analysis Free Online Research Papers As the novel progresses, the scarlet letter changes from a symbol of sin and ignominy to a symbol of strength and benevolence, due to Hester’s actions in the community. When the scarlet letter first appears in chapter two, it is meant to be a symbol of Hester’s shame, and is supposed to make her feel abject. As Hester does charitable deeds throughout the book, it becomes a symbol of her compassion and sympathy. In the first scene, Hester was brought before a large throng of people to exhibit her shame and her child. On her chest, she wore the scarlet letter, the physical symbol of her sin. At this point, it served its intended purpose, which was to make Hester into an outcast, and to bring out the immorality of her actions. It also set an example for the rest of the community, showing them that they will also be scorned and punished if they commit adultery. Although Hester was supposed to feel remorse for her actions, she outwardly rebelled against her punishment by embroidering the letter beautifully with golden thread. This showed her fortitude and pride, even thought they were meant to be suppressed. In chapter seven, Hester visited the governor’s house to deliver the gloves that he had ordered and to plead her case for keeping Pearl. While she and Pearl were waiting for the governor, they examined the elaborate suit of armor in the main room of the house. Pearl observed that both the helmet and breastplate distorted the image of Hester, magnifying the scarlet letter to dominate her figure. This likeness is intended to symbolize how the rest of the community sees Hester: not for her as a person, but only for the letter and its significance. This shows how the letter has expanded from just representing her sin to representing Hester as a whole. Even though Hester was shunned by the community, she did a lot to give back to it. She donated food to and made clothing for those less fortunate than her. Hester was â€Å"so kind to the poor, so helpful to the sick, so comfortable to the afflicted,† (page 127). By chapter thirteen, members of the community began to reject the original meaning of the scarlet A, adulteress, and instead interpreted the letter to stand for Abel, â€Å"so strong was Hester Prynne, with a woman’s strength,† (page 127). This is because her outstanding community service led her to be considered an apotheosis of a model citizen, just as Abel was. This shows that Hesters actions were able to change the scarlet letters meaning as well as her status in the community. As they naturally do, rumors quickly spread about Hester and the scarlet letter. It was said that the letter had an effect similar to that of a cross around the neck of a nun: she could â€Å"walk securely amid all peril,† (page 127). This ability to walk among peril was implemented during her everyday life: just living in a Puritan community as a sinner was dangerous. An especially strange story arose that an arrow shot from the bow of a Native American struck the scarlet letter and fell harmlessly to the ground (page 127). In keeping with the basic trend of all rumors, they changed the way that many viewed Hester Prynne, even creating a mystical aura about her, which might lead people to believe that she was in league with the Black Man. This adds graver meanings to the scarlet letter: witchcraft and Satanism. â€Å"Be true! Be true! Be true! Show freely to the world, if not your worst, yet some trait whereby the worst may be inferred!† (page 202). This relates directly to Mr. Dimmesdale, because he held his sins in and did not tell the truth. Because of this, he was forced to suffer inwardly for seven long years, in which his sin ate him alive from the inside. This led him to finally expose his sin, which allowed him to die peacefully. Although applied to Mr. Dimmesdale, it also shows in Hester. This is because she did not actually confess anything to the community, but instead Pearl came forth to allow the community to infer what Hester had done. It stresses the importance of being true, because, had Hester told the truth in the first place, she would not have had to suffer the scarlet letter for so many years. Even though Hester grew on the community, she was still considered an outcast. For example, during the procession, there was still a vacant bubble around her in the crowd because no one wanted to get too close to her. This changed however, later on, when Hester returned to Boston. The scarlet letter â€Å"ceased to be a stigma which attracted the world’s scorn and bitterness, and became†¦ looked upon with awe, yet reverence, too,† (page 204). In the end, the scarlet letter transforms to symbolize Hester’s entire life. Inscribed on her gravestone were the words â€Å"On a field, Sable, the letter A, Gules,† (page 205). This inscription shows that all she will be remembered for is the scarlet letter not her charity, not her community service, but the letter. The letter itself takes the lengthy journey from a symbol of sin, to that of charity, to that of remembrance. The letter is a conflicting symbol, but as Nathaniel Hawthorne himself was conflicted, it is to be expected. An Inspector Calls Essay I believe that An Inspector Calls is a successful play because all audiences enjoy suspense and tension, and in this story they run rampant. The tense atmosphere and great pace means that the audience never gets bored. The feelings from the characters can be related to real life and this makes the play that bit more believable. The issues in the play are also issues of today, the prejudice and social class, mean a lot in the play and to some extent they also appear in modern day life. The rich expect different treatment from those of lower classes and also expect a different set of laws. The way the inspector talks to the Birlings and to Gerald Croft brings them down to a different level to the one that they are used to. The inspector questions things that Mr Birling thinks are not for him to question. Mr Birling: . I refused of course Inspector: Why? Mr Birling (surprised): did you say why? The inspector, it seems, will not be intimidated by Mr Birling. Mr Birling: How do you get on with our Chief constable, Colonel Roberts? Inspector: I dont see much of him. Mr Birling: Perhaps I ought to warn you that hes an old friend of mine, and that I see him fairly regularly. .. Inspector (dryly): I dont play golf. This shows that the inspector means business and will not be threatened off the case. This conflict runs through the play and the audience is awed by the way that the inspector coolly and calmly handles the investigation. He has an aura of mystery about him that audiences love. The name Goole, could be a clever trick on words, Goole sounds the same as Ghoul. One meaning a supernatural beast and the other a simple name. This theory fits in with the content of the play, the inspector is not intimidated by threats, each line of enquiry has a result, this is incredible almost as if he knew what they were going to say, as Sheila notes Sheila (slowly): We hardly ever told him anything that he didnt know. Did you notice that? It is almost as if the inspector has been sent from the future to show the Birlings the error of their ways. Sheila points out again; Sheila (passionately): Youre pretending everythings just as it is before. And Sheila: I tell you whoever that inspector was it was far from a joke. You knew it then. You began to learn something. And now youve stopped. The inspector wrenches them from their cosy world and shows them a bit of the real world. None of the family (Except the younger generation) knows what their town is really like, as Mrs Birling exclaims; Mrs Birling (staggered): Well, really! Alderman Meggarty! I must say, we are learning something tonight. The atmosphere also has a large influence on the audience. It fluctuates greatly from being light and airy when they are celebrating to when the inspector is questioning and during the final part it is dark and sombre. This has a very dramatic effect and compels you to continue reading the play if you are watching the play unfold before you the effect, I expect, is magnified. Most plots have one twist but this play has several. The audience is enthralled that a respectable middle class family could be responsible for such a death. The audience waits patiently for the inspector to implicate and arrest one but much to their surprise he implicates all of them in the suicide, each accusation getting worse from firing her as an employee to being impregnated by a young drunkard. This fact means that the audience gradually build up their suspense for the final character Eric. But another twist is evoked and the inspector does not arrest anybody. The final twist though is the greatest. As the play draws to a close, the phone rings it is the Police Station phoning to say that a young girl has just died and that an inspector will be over to ask a few questions. This is ironic in the extreme, the play has come full circle and is about to start all over again it seems. Any thing that keeps the audience waiting or does not expect, the audience likes and this final twist is certainly not expected. Another factor to the written marvel that is this play is the timing of bells or the telephone. At the beginning of the play when Mr Birling is giving the two young boys some good advice he is interrupted by the arrival of the inspector. Mr Birling (solemnly): .. that a man has to mind his own business and look after his own and We hear the sharp ring of a frond door bell. BIRLING stops to listen. It is ironic that Mr Birling is saying that every man has to mind of his own business and should look after himself. The inspector makes them see other peoples problems and not just there own. Each of the characters are implicated, this is ironic because they all say that they had nothing to/or to do with the girl. It is also ironic that Mrs Birling implicates her son. Mrs Birling(severely):. And if youd take some steps to find this young man and then make sure that he is compelled to confess in public his responsibility- instead of staying here asking unnecessary questions then you would really be doing your duty. ..Mrs Birling (understanding now): But surely I mean. its ridiculous The whole play is set in one room. This means that the characters have to focus on the characters because there is no new scene for their eyes to explore. As a result they can get an understanding of the characters that some other plays dont allow, the audience feels that they are a part of events they can relate to images and ideas explored in the play and so this makes the play that bit more vivid and exciting. It is for these reasons that the play is so successful. There are many topics that can be related to todays life, this provokes thoughts from the audience that they would not otherwise had. The characters in the play are easy to relate to and are a masterful creation, because of this the story is easy to follow and involving for the audience. The plot has been written so that things you expect to happen, happen, but they still surprise you, and things that you as the audience dont expect to happen still happen. All of these things contribute to a beautifully crafted and thought out play and this makes it one of my favorites.

The current state of governance in Middle Eastern countries is one that demonstrates numerous examples of human rights being violated and preposterous actions being taken in the name of Islam, the most widely practiced religion in the region. In light of these instances the question posed is whether or not religious beliefs should be excluded from the consideration of public policy in the area. Despite the current state of affairs in the Middle East, this paper asserts that religious beliefs should not be excluded from the consideration of public policy as this would involve ignoring the undeniable fact that Islam plays a major role in Middle Eastern public life, it would lead to the better protection of ethnic and religious minorities and it would result in development since the objectives of Islam and public policy coincide more often than not. When discussing the role of religion with regards to public policy one cannot help but recall Max Webber’s observation on the subjec t, where he notes a decline of religion especially in the public sphere. This paper will demonstrate the compatibility and importance of religion with public policy by highlighting the wealth of common objectives that the two share, placing a key emphasis on the interdependence of Islam and Middle Eastern life. It will also explore the high-quality treatment extended to minorities in Middle Eastern states while drawing parallels with Western societies and discussing the incompatibility of Islam and the Universal Declaration Of Human Rights. Food Important Aspect In Our Lives Essay

Food an important aspect in our lives has always been affected by the way we distribute it. With proper channels we will be satisfied by our actions; we will all either benefit or loose. In the event that there is food shortage followed by poor distribution of whatever is available it leads to persistent starvations and can lead to death. In December 27, 2002 Mason Booth a Red Cross Organization staff writer wrote and I quote â€Å"There is nothing growing. Looking around the entire land is dry and barren. We only have enough food for the most severely affected people†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ How many more are going to die until we have enough to feed you all? † From the report reading further we find out that the starvation at large results from lack of food situation. From this example of the report we discover that famine is a situation of chronic starvation and death. Like the conditions in Malawi, though several factors contribute to the situations are one and most important primary reason was a prolonged drought that withered harvests hence resulting to vast food shortages. The regions conditions at that moment were the worst, in the Southern Africa. Not only does the weather conditions affect productivity other factors have at large contributed to this situation. For instance, we get to know how famine is fueled by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. In this region where at that moment HIV/AIDS prevalence rates were the highest and some countries more than 30% of the adult population was infected. It impacted on security where even if it’s a rainy season there is no good in preparation, nurturing and harvesting because there is no body to do this. There is also the question the rising demand for food between the population growth rates and death rate. There is more demand for food than the production rate or supplies can meet. (97-99) With reference to the Asian, African and Latin American countries an approximate of 500 million people under what the World Bank describes as absolute poverty. In addition the breakdown in distribution mechanisms of food has also contributed at large. War situations have been a major factor. Citing an example of North Africa and Middle East it’s evident that war torn areas suffer greatly from shortages of food which eventually leads to famine and starvation. For instance massive human rights abuses in Sudan and most parts in that region have been reported as the major cause of famine. It is estimated that three million Sudanese food securities was destroyed by civil war and drought any they eventually became sufferers to this crisis. Due to human displacement, there are no serious agricultural activities and productivity reduces due to shift of focus in productivity to war. To date and more than two decades of civil clash and three years of severe drought, Sudan is still teetering on the brink of a severe food crisis. While the food stocks deteriorate and water boreholes drying up the conflict shows no signs of recovery. Resources can be scarce but famine and starvation can never be hard off if there are good distribution systems. If compared to developing countries, at the moment developing countries are starving to death and the developed countries are getting worried of which kind of food should they buy or not, whether to eat or not. Globally if we compare massive surplus exists in Europe and the United States while the developing worlds have nothing. It is note able that there is lack of a proper distribution channel or mechanism. Developed countries have proper markets and produce high yields for their markets while developing countries agriculture is lacking from untreated diseases, food shortage, bad hygiene low capital and income inputs. Developed countries like the British government who were expected to look upon the matter were slow and insignificant to no response. The economic policies that existed were unhelpful and the British parliament refused to make adjustments to provide for a national disaster. No food was offered to the starving people as along as there was food for sale. Conclusion If the two major factors are combined using the various cited examples they are results to starvation and lead to other human death related conditions that cannot be avoided. In any case circumstances from one situation may change and could breakdown distribution channels of food or even land of proper healthcare.
